Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Novell GroupWise is a client-server collaborative software and email system provided by Novell. Novell GroupWise Internet Agent is a component of Novell GroupWise and provides email services, supporting SMTP, POP, and IMAP protocols. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Novell GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA). The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow in the Novell GroupWise Internet Agent when parsing a RRULE variable of a VCALENDAR inside an email. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by sending a malicious email to the target. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in arbitrary code execution on an affected system and may terminate the vulnerable application abnormally.

Protection Overview

This protection detects and blocks malicious email messages sent to the Novell GroupWise Internet Agent.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Novell GroupWise Internet Agent RRULE Parsing Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
