Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Microsoft Internet Explorer supports the rendering of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) images in HTML pages. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in the Microsoft Internet Explorer JPEG image rendering component. The vulnerability is due to the improper validation of user specified data in JPEG image files. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by enticing the target user to open a malicious JPEG image file, which may terminate the browser, or execute arbitrary code with the security context of the currently logged in user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed JPEG files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Internet Explorer JPEG Rendering Buffer Overflow (MS05-038) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
