Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Office Excel. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in an affected system. The vulnerability is due to lack of validation of certain record structures while handling specially crafted Excel files. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by enticing a victim to open a specially crafted Excel file. Successful exploitation would allow an attacker to gain complete control over an affected system, in the security context of the local user.

Protection Overview

This protection detects and blocks attempts to transfer malicious Excel files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Excel Conditional Expression Parsing Code Execution (MS11-072) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
