Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Office. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in an affected system. The vulnerability is caused due to an uninitialized pointer used by Microsoft Office while handling Word documents. A remote attacker could trigger the vulnerability by enticing an affected user to open a specially crafted Word document. Successful exploitation would allow an attacker to gain complete control over an affected system, in the security context of the local user.

Protection Overview

This protection detects and blocks attempts to transfer malformed Word files.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Office Uninitialized Object Pointer (MS11-073) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
