Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Publisher. The vulnerability is caused when Microsoft Publisher does not properly handle values in memory while parsing specially crafted Publisher files. A remote attacker may exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to open a specially crafted Publisher file, usually included as an email attachment or on a malicious web site. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the logged-on user.

Protection Overview

IPS will detect and block the transferring of specially crafted Publisher files.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Publisher Invalid Pointer Code Execution (MS11-091) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
