Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center. The vulnerability is caused due to a memory corruption condition while parsing specially crafted DVR-MS media files. A remote attacker could trigger this issue by enticing an unsuspecting user to open a malformed .dvr-ms file with an affected version of Microsoft Media Player or Media Center. Successful exploitation would allow an attacker to gain complete control over an affected system, in the security context of the logged on user.

Protection Overview

IPS will detect and block the transferring of malicious .dvr-ms files.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Media Player DVR-MS Memory Corruption (MS11-092) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Media Player Enforcement Violation.
