Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability is due to an error in the way that the msvcrt.DLL calculates the size of a buffer in memory, allowing data to be copied into memory that has not been properly allocated. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by enticing a target user to visit a web-page containing a specially crafted media file. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to take complete control of an affected system, in the security context of the logged on user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed media files.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Msvcrt.dll Media File Code Execution (MS12-013) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
