Vulnerability Description | Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products offer data protection for distributed servers, clients, databases and applications. They provide centralized control over a series of distributed operations including Backup and Restore, Data Migration, and Threat Management. There exists a design error vulnerability in BrightStor ARCserve Backup service. The vulnerability is due to an input validation error within mediasvr.exe when processing certain RPC requests. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to create a denial of service condition or execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system in the context of the affected application, commonly System. In an attack case where code injection and execution is unsuccessful, the target Media Server service will terminate upon exploitation. The Tape Engine service needs to be restarted manually to restore the functionality of the server. If an attack results in successful code injection and its subsequent execution, the behavior of the target host will depend on the intention of the attacker. Note that any code execution will be within the security context of the affected application. |
