Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Ingres developed a relational database product named Ingres Database. Ingres Database is made available for both Windows and Unix-like platforms. The product is embedded by other software vendors such as Computer Associates (CA). A heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Ingres Database Communications Server. The vulnerability is due to an insufficient boundary check when handling user supplied data. A remote unauthenticated attacker may leverage this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted request. Successful exploitation may cause the execution of arbitrary code on the target system with System privileges. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security of the affected process, commonly the System account on Windows platforms. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the Communications Server process will terminate abnormally, creating a denial-of-service condition.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Ingres Database Communications Server Component Heap Buffer Overflow - Ver2 protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
